My son is deathly allergic to the protein in milk called casein. If he is exposed to milk or milk products enough his allergy could escalate into anaphylactic shock…like people get with peanuts. Unlike lactose intolerance, this is something you cannot grow out of and it is potentially deadly.
I had suspected was the case since before my son was weaned and it was only compounded when I tried to give him regular milk and he ended up with all kinds of issues from 2 bottles of milk. I was told by unknowing family members that I needed to keep giving him the milk so he would get used to it and the allergy would pass. Little did they know that I already knew what the next step was going to be: Soy Milk.
I have been criticized in front of my face and behind my back for giving my son soy milk. The truth of the matter is that soy milk is better than cow’s milk any day. It is more natural and nutritious. I know that my son fares better with soy than regular milks. Lactaid is not an option because it still contains casein. Goat’s milk has lactose. Rice milk is not nearly as nutritious.
Not to mention, my son ADORES soy milk. He drinks it regularly and begs for it if there is none. He has grown to be the size of a 6 year old at the age of *nearly* 4 from breast milk to soy milk. He has never needed a vitamin supplement and is a very healthy eater. He will end up with lower cholesterol, lower risk of cancer and heart disease, and overall better health because I saw something that others didn’t see.
I have no complaints about soy milk. I don’t like it myself, but my husband and my son are all the better for it.

My nephew is allergic to milk, too. Do you have to carry an epi pen with you? Everyone at my brother’s house drinks soy milk!
I’ve been lucky, out of my five, two of them are lactose intolerant but not to that severe of an allergy. Back when my oldest daughter had allergy issues soy products were not that available so we used goats milk. She was thankfully able to tolerate that.
