We all try to be something we are not at one point or another. Some of us have to wear masks every day of our natural lives…until one day the masks become us and there is no turning back. I also think that this is more complex than it sounds. I try to mask my depression with fake happiness, hoping that happiness will take over. The only thing that seems to happen is that I can switch my faces like the jester who wears the sad face on one side of his head and the happy face on the other. I am also reminded of the Neverending Story when Atreiu went to the palace and that one guy was standing there with his faces changing endlessly so as to portray whatever he wanted people to see at the time. It’s been said more than once that the world is a stage and we all just play our parts. It’s the truest statement ever made.
