The origin of words

My sister told me that the word Spic came from Spanish speaking people saying “no spic ingles” … Well I had to laugh because that is one of the silliest things I have ever heard. It’s even worse because it’s true.

Spic is a clipping of the adjective spiggoty which was applied to immigrants from Central and South America because they did not “spiggoty English” (speak the English).

Holy mess! I had to laugh hysterically at this since it was just so ridiculous. The ways that people can find to make something derogatory never cease to amaze me. For instance, how do you get coon for a derogatory word for African-Americans?

That’s crazy – I never knew where that word came from!

Gosh, humans really are good at turning things negative, huh?

  2. Einstein says:

Indeed, humans are much better at turning things negative than animals.
