Getting old scares me more and more every day. Sure, this country takes better care of their elderly than many, but I can’t help but thing they can do better. The facilities that are out there purporting to do well for those in their care really need to take another look at their assisted living software and get with it. My grandmother lived in one of those places and it was TERRIBLE. The other wasn’t so bad. The first, well, I never wanted to visit because of the stench and utter lack of care. The second was better, didn’t have that smell…but they still had a few things that lacked. My brother in law was in one, too…after his surgery. It was the best that I have seen, but STILL had issues. I mean, every facility does, but there are certain fundamental things that should be covered…like waste disposal. I pray that I never get to the point where I have to be in one of those facilities…unless drastic improvements are made to the system by then.

I really got my eyes opened to the state of nursing homes when my mom recovering from partial hip replacement had to go to a nursing home for a month. She also have brain cancer that complicated everything, but what I wasn’t prepared for is how they took away her dignity because of letting her sit in her own urine…that was totally not my mother and I felt terrible…and this was one of the best nursing homes in our city. There is a great book out about this and can’t think of it now, but this writer went through the same things. Something inside me enraged at these people being paid so handsomely and treating my mother with no diginity and ignoring her..she ended up with terrible sores that had to be treated with heavy antibiotics….this country is in for a rude awakening soon….we’re going to hear more about this.
